Update on Celtic Interconnector

Updated: Apr 24

1 April 2023

On 16th March 2023, Sorensen Civil Engineering Ltd. signed a contract with Nexans to deliver the cable works from the landfall site at Claycastle Beach, to the grid connection point at Knockraha Substation.

They are now planning to commence trenching and ducting works at Knockraha in late May 2023.

What happens next

In advance of the commencement of the main works and to assist the detailed design process, site investigations are required along the cable route. These site investigations are planned to commence at Knockraha Substation in early April 2023 and move eastwards towards Youghal. It will require trial hole excavations and boreholes along the route of the cable. The site investigations will predominantly be in roadways, with a small number of boreholes and trial holes at off-road locations. All site investigation works located on roads will be carried out under lane-closures with access always assured. This means that road closures are not required. This will minimise any disruption to the general public, residents along the route and local business owners.

Keep in touch

As the works progress, residents and businesses along the route will be contacted by Nexans and Sorensen directly. The Sorensen team will also call door-to-door to local residents and businesses in advance of the site investigation works as they progress along the route. They will be providing more detailed information on the works and any planned traffic management.
